Onions are N.Z.Growers's predominate product. We source our onions from 3 main locations through out the country. These 3 locations are Pukekohe, Matamata and the Hawke's Bay area. Each location offers high quality produce. Pukekohe Onions have been grown in New Zealand since the beginning of the countries colonization by European settlers. Due to New Zealand's isolation which restricted supplies from other countries, in 1923 Pukekohe growers developed the now world famous "Pukekohe long keeper" (PLK), since then other varieties have also been developed, and today Pukekohe also specializes in Brown Onions which have exceptional storage qualities. Pukekohe does not only specialize in onions but is responsible for producing a large variety of vegetables (Potatoes, Broccoli and many oriental vegetables) destined for the Auckland Isthmus population approximately 1 million. Onion varieties grown are:- Valley Brown, Supreme, Kiwi Gold, Early Cream Gold (ECG), Early Long Keeper (ELK) Pukekohe Long Keeper (PLK), Spring Grove Early. Also Hybrids: 6808, 6809, 6724, T400 (Parat, Takmark) and Tango (red). Matamata Matamata is famous for its dairy industry, thoroughbred Horse Breeding and Forestry. Matamata is fast becoming recognised for its horticultural potential. Diverse cropping is being established with the area growing, onions, potatoes, kiwifruit and with the berry fruit orchards. The area is renown for being able to produce lush pasture and the climate is conducive for onion and vegetable crops. Hawkes Bay Hawkes Bay is commonly known as the 'fruit bowl' of New Zealand but quickly establishing itself on the World Wine Markets as the producer of Premium Quality Wines. It has always been a region for quality vegetables and is firmly established as the major vegetable processing area in New Zealand. Onions grow exceptionally well especially reds and the mild climate conditions are conducive to a quality product. Also conveniently Hawkes Bay is in close proximity to ports at Napier and Tauranga. This contributes to the exporting of quality produce from this area. |
